Interview your Photographer and Cinematographer
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW?
At MPSG we understand that finding your ideal Wedding Photographer can be a challenging task. To make this experience more enjoyable we have built a 15 question guideline to help you find your ideal photographer or cinematographer for your wedding day.
WHAT IS YOUR STYLE?
First, let’s talk style. Your primary style is the type of photography that captures your interest and vision of your wedding day. At MPSG, our Photographers and Cinematographers are photojournalists who are influenced by fashion and fine-art techniques. Visit our About Us page, for more information on our company’s philosophy to delivering lasting memories.
HOW MANY WEDDINGS HAVE THEY SHOT, AND HAVE THEY SHOT WEDDINGS SIMILAR TO YOURS?
Time to gauge experience. Be specific when asking questions regarding the amount of work experience the photographer has. Years are not the best gauge of experience. It is important to ask because in some cases wedding photographers may work part time, and only shoot four weddings a year on a weekend basis. Therefore six years of experience, only equals 24 weddings. At MPSG we do over 100 weddings a year.
HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU WORKED SPECIFICALLY AS A WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER?
The Wedding Specialist vs One-Stop-Shop. This question is designed to determine if the photographers specialize in wedding photography. We recommend, finding a photographer that specializes, not only in wedding photography but also the style of wedding photography you desire.
HOW MANY OTHER EVENTS WILL YOU BE PHOTOGRAPHING THAT DAY?
Large Studios vs Small Studios. At MPSG we take pride in our ability to have the resources to accommodate the needs of our clients. The benefit of having a large studio with multiple master photographers and cinematographers eliminates the double and even triple book dates seen with smaller studios. Smaller studios due to the lack of resources may have to plan and juggle multiple weddings on a weekend. A single wedding photographer shooting 2-3 weddings on a weekend, might compromise the attention to the detail, and service delivered the client.
WILL THERE BE A CONTRACT OF SERVICE PROVIDED?
Sign a Contract. A contract protects the client and wedding photographer. There are many studios that choose to not create contracts for their wedding photography clients. You should make the contract a requirement, as it will confirm what services will be provided, the price, termination resolution terms, etc. Hire a photographer that will take the time to build a contract with you and be cautious of photographers that “don’t create contracts for clients.”
WHAT HAPPENS IF THE PHOTOGRAPHER IS UNABLE TO WORK DUE TO ILLNESS?
While it is unlikely that the photographer happens to get ill on your wedding day, it is best to still plan for worse case scenario. It is important that the studio has a plan in case this situation may arise. MPSG has three equally skilled master photo and cinema teams that can take over in the event someone is ill.
IS YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER/CINEMATOGRAPHER INSURED?
Insurance is Protection. At MPSG, we are insured in general business, equipment and liability insurance. A professional wedding photographer should have the necessary insurance for their business needs. Insurance protects the photographer against equipment theft and damage, but more importantly provides liability protection in the case of an accident. If a wedding photographer does not have insurance, they might be new to the industry or they are not taking their business seriously.
IS THE PACKAGE I AM INTERESTED IN INCLUDE AN ASSISTANT?
50 or more guests upgrade for an Assistant. You should ensure that you purchase a package that includes an assistant photographer if you have 50 or more guests. On your wedding day there will be many moments in which a single photographer cannot cover completely alone. There is no way to capture the first dance, and at the same time, turn around and capture the emotions of your family members.
DOES YOUR STUDIO PROVIDE AN OPTION TO CHOOSE A CERTAIN STYLE OF POST PRODUCTION?
Perfect your photo with Post-Production. Another component, is to personalize how your pictures will look in post-production. Be cautious, as many studios do not provide a post-production service. Instead they leave your images unfinished and straight from the camera. The attention to detail matters when delivering memories we will treasure.
Unique to MPSG, is a Post-Production Catalogue. We specialize in timeless post production techniques, that allow each and every client to decide which styles of post production they like and which we will use to then post-produce their images.
WILL YOU COLOUR CORRECT MY IMAGES?
Colour correction is the most basic post-production. Colour correction should be used on every single image. Many photographers will not take the time to colour correct your images. By not receiving this service you may have a lot of pictures where your skin tones are orange, yellow, red or even blue. MPSG colour corrects all images to make sure each and every image is a professional quality product.
WHAT KIND OF EQUIPMENT/BACK UPS DO YOU USE?
MPSG takes pride in our Equipment. Our studio uses top quality camera bodies along with the finest quality lenses, such as a Canon. While wedding photographers don’t necessarily need the best of the best, it is important to have a good set of equipment. Make sure your photographer has at least the following items along with backups. Nothing would be worse than for the photographer to miss half of your wedding because their camera or lens broke, and they didn’t have a spare.
IN THE EVENT MY WEDDING LASTS LONGER THAN SCHEDULED, WILL YOU STAY? IS THIS AN ADDITIONAL CHARGE?
Another good reason for a Contract. Understanding the photographers policy on overages is crucial. You do not want any surprises when the wedding photographer asks for an additional $1,500 payment before releasing your pictures. In addition, you do not want your wedding photographer to just pack up and leave because there time is up.
WHAT ATTIRE WILL THE PHOTOGRAPHER AND ASSISTANTS WEAR?
The Art of Blending In. Even though the wedding photographers are a big part of the wedding day, it’s essential that they are not distractions. Therefore, it’s important for the photographer to blend in as much as possible. We understand for religious or cultural ceremonies, there may be certain colours that are inappropriate. This will ensure your photographers will be dressed appropriately for the occasion. At MPSG our attire is black suit pants with a black polo or dress shirt. We dress completely in black because we want to go unnoticed by the clients and guests, so that we can capture the event as photojournalists.
HOW LONG AFTER THE WEDDING WILL THE PROOFS, ALBUM, ETC BE READY?
When will you Deliver. Each wedding photography studio will vary in regards to the time it takes to produce and deliver your pictures. Studios that do not provide any post production or colour correction services may try to entice you by guaranteeing your photos will be ready within the week, or even the next day. Remember attention to detail is important. Most studios that develop and produce their images will take anywhere from 2 weeks to 6 months. MPSG has developed a consistent production schedule in order to deliver an amazing product in an exceptionally quick manner.
